12×12 reproduction of my original art

“I didn’t have an easy home life. My father used drugs, so even though he was there physically, he wasn’t there mentally. Because he was not productive, we lived paycheck to paycheck. My mother tried to insulate us from the struggles of daily life, and I always had a roof over my head and food to eat. In school, I struggled academically. I was told I had Attention Deficit Disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder. Eventually, I was diagnosed with liver disease and signs of early epilepsy. Despite these challenges, I graduated from high school, and I’m working on my college degree in Human Services. For a long time I thought I had no life in me, but by doing things I like, I breathed life back into myself. Over the past few years I’ve realized I have to know myself: my likes and dislikes, my boundaries and beliefs, what gives me a sense of purpose and what drains me. A few years ago, my mother shared her journals with me, and I read about everything she had been privately going through. I saw life through her eyes. She always taught me: ‘Don’t be like me, be better than me,’ so no matter what I do, I strive to learn.”
